Yes. Creatine does not need food to work, and a 5 g serving taken on an empty stomach still counts toward the daily total that fills your muscle stores over 3 to 4 weeks.

Food does have a measured effect on how much creatine is retained, which is a separate question from whether it works. Both are covered below.

This page is not a ranking

The honest version of this answer has two halves, and supplement pages usually give only the convenient one. Taking creatine without food is fine. Taking it with carbohydrate and protein has been shown to improve retention. Both are true.

The short answer

You can take creatine on an empty stomach. It will still raise muscle creatine stores at 5 g per day. If it is easy to take it alongside a meal, retention is measurably better; if it is not easy, take it anyway rather than skipping the day.

What food actually changes

Ingesting creatine with carbohydrate or carbohydrate and protein have been reported to more consistently promote greater creatine retention.

Kreider et al. (2017), Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 14:18

The wording is worth reading closely. Retention means how much of a dose your muscles hold on to, and the finding is that food promotes it more consistently. Nothing there says creatine fails without food.

The amounts of food involved are larger than people assume

co-ingesting creatine (5 g) with 47-97 g of carbohydrate and 50 g of protein enhanced creatine retention.

Steenge et al., reported in Kreider et al. (2017), Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 14:18

That is a substantial meal, not a biscuit. Roughly 47 g to 97 g of carbohydrate and 50 g of protein is a proper plate of food. It is worth knowing the scale before reorganising your day around taking a supplement with a snack.

It also helps to see how little creatine food actually supplies:

For example, a pound of uncooked beef and salmon provides about 1-2 g of creatine.

Kreider et al. (2017), Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 14:18

Food changes how much of a dose is retained. It does not supply the dose.

Empty stomach, with a meal, or with a snack

How you take it Does it work? Retention
Empty stomach Yes Baseline
With a full meal (carbs and protein) Yes Improved, per the research above
With a small snack Yes Between the two. The studied effect used much larger amounts
Skipped because there was no food No Zero. This is the only genuinely bad option

Does creatine upset an empty stomach?

Some people report mild digestive discomfort taking creatine powder without food, which is usually attributed to the concentration in the gut when a dose is mixed into a small volume of water. If that describes you, taking it with a meal is a reasonable practical fix.

For gummies the variable is different. The base and sweetening system are what a sensitive stomach may react to, rather than the creatine. Supps gummies use sucralose and steviol glycosides.

The creatine itself is not the variable here, because it is handled by ordinary digestion:

~99% of orally ingested creatine monohydrate is either taken up by tissue or excreted in the urine as creatine through normal digestion

Antonio et al. (2021), Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition

How Supps does it

A Supps serving needs no water and no mixing, which is what makes an empty stomach and a rushed morning both workable. 5 g of creatine monohydrate across three gummies. 90 gummies per pouch, 30 days at one serving a day. Every batch is independently tested by RSSL and Eurofins UK, with measured results published at our lab results page, in grams, for every batch.

Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise. This benefit is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine. Three Supps gummies provide 5 g.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take creatine without food?

Yes. Creatine does not require food to raise muscle stores, and a 5 g serving on an empty stomach still counts toward your daily total. Taking it with carbohydrate and protein has been shown to improve retention, but taking it without food is far better than skipping it.

Does creatine work on an empty stomach?

Yes. Muscle creatine stores build over 3 to 4 weeks from a consistent daily intake. Whether a given serving arrives with food changes retention rather than whether the mechanism works.

Should I take creatine with food?

If it is convenient, yes, because co-ingestion with carbohydrate and protein improves retention. The studied amounts were substantial, roughly 47 g to 97 g of carbohydrate with 50 g of protein, so this means a proper meal rather than a snack.

Can I take creatine gummies on an empty stomach?

Yes. Gummies need no water and no mixing, which is what makes taking them away from meals straightforward. If a sensitive stomach is a concern, note that the gummy base and sweetening system are the likelier cause of discomfort than the creatine.

Does taking creatine with food make it work better?

Co-ingesting creatine with carbohydrate and protein improves how much of the dose is retained. It does not change what creatine does or how long saturation takes.

What if I always forget to eat when I take it?

Take it anyway. A serving without food contributes to your daily total; a skipped serving contributes nothing. Consistency is worth more than optimisation here.
